On Air: The Official Blog of WSJU Sports

After a dismal performance in the first of their double header, The New York Yankees went on an offensive serge as well as another brilliant pitching performance from Phil Hughes.

Hughes went 7 innings striking out 8 Detroit Tigers batters and only allowing 5 hits. Javier Vazquez had similar numbers in the first of the two games but wasn’t able to get the run support Hughes got.

The Yankees scored 8 runs in the night game to the afternoons 0 runs. Mark Teixeria went 2-5 with 3 runs batted in and Alex Rodriguez went also 2-5 but with 2 runs batted in. Brett Gardner went 3-5 with one run batted in and stole his 16th base of the season. Joba Chamberlain got the hold tossing 1 scoreless inning and Mariano Rivera made his first appearance on the mound since April 30th. He joked after the game saying “I got a little map” which he used to find his way back to the mound.

Yankees will square off again against the Tigers for the fourth game of the series in which Detroit has won 2 of the 3 so far. Great pitchers set to take the mound as C.C. Sabathia (4-1 3.04ERA) takes on Justin Verlander (3-2 4.50ERA) today at 1:15.
