On Air: The Official Blog of WSJU Sports

After what seemed to be a 20 minute deliberation between New York Mets Manager Jerry Manuel, pitcher Fernando Nieve, and the rest of the Mets infield on whether to pitch to Dan Uggla, who didn’t start because of his numbers against Johan Santana weren’t in favor, or walk him to get to Brett Carrol who was on deck, the Mets decided to throw balls away from the strike zone to Uggla and hope he swings and if not let him walk and face Carrol. Well the Mets did throw the ball away. So far away, in fact, that Cody Ross was able to score from third on a pass ball by catcher Rod Barajas. I don’t think that was part of the discussion. That would be the game winner giving the Florida Marlins a 2-1 victory.

Johan Santana, the starter for the game, pitched a great game, going 7 innings, striking out 5 batters and only walking 1. Josh Johnson, the starter for the Marlins, matched Santana, going 7 innings and striking out 7 batters, but did give up a run.

Mets and Marlins go at it again for the second game of four tonight. Jekyll and Hyde himself Oliver Perez takes the mound for the ‘Amazins and Anibal Sanchez takes the mound for the Marlins. Both pitchers are posting a 4.00+ ERA this season
